What are the causes of chronic pain?

Chronic pain is complex and not always understood. At Anchor Care, Dr. Ogunmefun can help develop a treatment plan that helps you find relief for your symptoms. However, sometimes chronic pain does not have a clear diagnosis.

Some of the more common causes of chronic pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Cancer
  • Trauma
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Degenerative spine disease

Nerve problems also cause chronic pain.

How do you evaluate chronic pain?

Dr. Ogunmefun seeks to manage your chronic pain while also avoiding the unpleasant side effects and possible addictive qualities of prescription medications. She’ll try to identify the root cause of your pain and try to treat it at its source.

First, she reviews your complete medical history and symptoms. Then, she performs a comprehensive physical exam, run imaging tests, and will evaluate any blood work. In trying to understand your pain, she’ll also ask questions about your symptoms, how long is has been going and its severity.

How can you help me with my chronic pain?

Chronic pain treatment depends on the cause of your pain and its severity. She may offer pain medications, like low-dose buprenorphine, to manage moderate to severe chronic pain. She will carefully monitor your use of this or other medications to reduce any risk of dependence or side effects.

She may also recommend nerve block injections to offer temporary pain relief, such as using steroids. Or, she may suggest spinal injections, like epidural steroids, sacroiliac injections or facet joint injections. These deliver anti-inflammatory medication straight to the affected nerve roots.

You may also benefit from physical therapy, electrical stimulation, and hot and cold therapies to reduce pain symptoms.

Pinning down a single course of treatment can be hard, so Dr. Ogunmefun takes a multi-faceted approach and closely monitors your pain symptoms to understand the best therapies for you. If you have a condition that would benefit from seeing a surgical specialist, she can also refer you to a trusted colleague and manage your pain following their treatment.
